Tips for Beginner Kendama Players

May 10, 2015

User /u/i_dont_know_karate on reddit created a post with incredible information for new kendama players. This post is inspired by their wisdom. Without further adieu,

6 Tips for Beginner Kendama Players

  1. Make a Budget
Your wallet will thank you. It is easy to lose track of your funds, but try to keep up. Kendama is addicting.

  2. Glue Your Tips
Glue the spike on your kendama. Blunt spikes don't play as well. Instead of using superglue "gel", try liquid superglue. It's much better.

  3. Share Your Progress
Create content. Posting on Instagram, Youtube, and Facebook (Shoutout to the Facebook Kendama Community!) is a good way to hold yourself accountable. Sharing your progress also helps you put yourself out there and be more visible. It'll be easier to get support and make new friends along the way.

  4. Have Other Hobbies
Besides making you a more well-rounded person, having other hobbies also helps you to avoid injuries. Sometimes a break is necessary and it is perfectly okay to take a break.

  5. Make Dama Friends
Playing kendama solo is cool, but human beings are social animals. It's easy to make new friends with a shared hobby, and you can help each other progress. It's also more fun.

  6. Give Back to the Kendama Community
Someone introduced you to kendama and inspired you to get better. You owe it to yourself and to the community at large to be a leader and give back. That could be as simple as making a tutorial or as elaborate as organizing a local tournament.
